1940 6 Man Football......For the first-ever induction of an entire team, no squal is more deserving than the 1940 Windham Bombers Six-Man football team. Without enough enrollment to feild an eleven-man team, Windham enthusiastically embraced the new sport of six-man football in 1938. Building on an undefeated 1939 team, which had been declared Ohio State Champion by American Boy Magazine, Coach Deane Eberwine built a squad which would become the most famous six-man team in America. Led by three players, Fed Stanley, Harold Stanley, and Robert Turner, who would be named first team All-Americans that year, Everwine's Bombers destroyed all eight opponents they faced that year, averaging almost 40 points a game while yielding only 37 points all season. Three of their games were stopped at halftime because Windham was so far ahead. On October 5, 1940, Everwine took his team to Niagra Falls Canada, for the first six-man football game between the two countries, in a game covered by the national press agencies. The Bombers defeated the Canadian national champions 39-1. Fittingly, American Boy Magazine named the 1940 Windham Bombers both the Ohio State Champion and the International Champion of the year. The members of the 1940 Windham Bombers Six-Man Football team were: Coach Deane Eberwine, Fred Stanley (WHS 1941) All-American First Team 1940, Robert Fechter (WHS 1941), Joe Pinnet (WHS 1942), Harold Belden (WHS 1942), Harold Stanley (WHS 1942) All-American First Team 1940, Robert Turner (WHS 1942) All-American First Team 1939 and 1940, Conrad Thrasher (WHS 1942), Bob Goss (WHS 1942), Don Miller, (WHS 1943), Art Joy (WHS 1943), Frank Janacek (WHS 1945), Sam Scott, George Brauker, William Richardson, Robert Pavlik (Manager)
Raymond Hilty......Principal and superintendent of the Windham Schools 1928-1936, first Windham Football coach, first Windham Baseball coach (PCL Championship 1934), first Windham Boys Basketball coach, first Windham Girls Basketball coach (PCL Championships 1931, 1933) Raymond Hilty came to windham from Pandora Ohio High School and Bluffton college as an English and Social Studies teacher in 1927. He became the Principle of Windham High School the following year and Superintendent in 1929, all while continuing as the English teacher. His first year in Windham, when he was the only male teacher on the faculty, he organized both the football and baseball teams, and when Windham's first gymnasium opened on October 3, 1927, he was ready to create the first boys and girls' basketball teams in WHS history. Very quickly he developed the girls' team into the most powerful, talented squad in Portage County. Several of Hilty's squads were undefeated and his 1931 team defeated Twinsburg of Summit County for the Northen Ohio Championship. That 1931 team won Windham High Schools first ever league championship. Hilty retired as the girls' basketball coach after winning the league championship in 1933, but the program he developed remained powerful until the abolition of the sport in Ohio in 1940. Windham also won the PCL championship in 1937. In the spring of 1934, Hilty guided the boys' baseball team to it's first ever PCL championship. Hilty left Windham in 1936 and eventually became an ordained minister in Dayton Ohio, founding the Greenmont-Oak Park Community Church and remaining it's pastor until his passing at the age of 84.
